KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has taken into custody the head of a non-governmental organisation accused of involvement in child trafficking activities in Karachi.
FIA officials revealed that the suspect was allegedly orchestrating the illegal smuggling of children to the United States under the pretext of adoption. The arrest followed a complaint lodged by the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, which raised suspicions regarding the NGO’s adoption procedures.
After launching an investigation into the matter, authorities uncovered evidence linking the suspect not only to child trafficking within Karachi but also to the creation of counterfeit documents aimed at facilitating the illegal export of minors abroad. A court hearing, presided over by the Special Judge Central in Karachi, rejected the suspect’s bail request, citing concerns over her potential flight risk. The court authorised her detention, citing sufficient evidence and the gravity of the allegations.
This case has triggered a broader inquiry into child protection laws and adoption procedures in Pakistan. Authorities are now scrutinising other NGOs and individuals who may be involved in similar illicit activities. The FIA has confirmed that investigations are ongoing and is actively examining other cases to root out such criminal networks. The development has highlighted ongoing concerns over child trafficking, drawing attention from both local and international organisations.
In a related case, FIA Balochistan officials recently arrested two individuals — including a foreign national — for allegedly engaging in visa fraud and human trafficking. The arrests were made by the FIA Gwadar’s Composite Circle during a targeted operation. The suspects identified are Joseph, a Nigerian citizen, and Mehmood Khan, a local agent.
