LAHORE: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) announced on Wednesday that the floodwaters of the Chenab River have surged past one million cusecs at Khanki, significantly surpassing the headworks’ designed capacity of 800,000 cusecs.
The NDMA expressed concerns that the unprecedented flood levels could compromise the hydraulic structures at the headworks. “All rescue operations are ongoing under the directives of the Prime Minister,” officials stated.
Currently, the Chenab River at Qadirabad is experiencing extremely high flood levels, with inflow and outflow reaching approximately 935,000 cusecs. The floodwaters have inundated multiple villages, damaging crops across thousands of acres.
In response, the district administration of Mandi Bahauddin has taken emergency measures, including breaking the protective embankment near Qadirabad through controlled blasting to divert the floodwaters away from populated areas.
Rescue teams have evacuated over 100 residents to safer locations. Additionally, five flood relief camps have been established, and nine boating points have been activated to assist in ongoing rescue efforts.
