China condemns US–Israel strikes on Iran, calls for halt to military operations

BEIJING: China has urged an immediate end to military operations involving Iran, cautioning that the conflict risks expanding beyond its current scope and destabilizing the broader region.

At a routine press briefing, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China expressed deep concern over the situation, criticizing recent US and Israeli strikes as breaches of international law and the fundamental principles governing relations between states. Beijing warned that continued military action could intensify tensions and draw additional countries into the crisis.

“We call on all sides to cease hostilities at once and prevent the further spread of war,” the spokesperson said, emphasizing the need to resume diplomatic engagement without delay. China reiterated that it is prepared to play a constructive role in promoting dialogue and reducing tensions.

Wang Yi Reaffirms Beijing’s Stance

In separate phone conversations with counterparts from Russia, Iran, France, and Oman, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi outlined China’s position and advocated for de-escalation.

Wang stated that military strikes by the United States and Israel during ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran are unacceptable. He argued that targeting the leadership of a sovereign nation and pursuing regime change violate international law and undermine established norms of international conduct.

According to Wang, China’s approach is guided by three core principles: an immediate halt to military actions; a swift return to dialogue and negotiations; and collective opposition to unilateral measures that could worsen the crisis.

Concern Over Civilian Harm

Beijing also voiced sorrow over reports of significant civilian casualties resulting from the strikes. The Foreign Ministry condemned what it described as indiscriminate use of force and stressed that protecting civilians during armed conflict is an inviolable obligation under international law.

China called on all parties involved to safeguard civilian lives, protect non-military infrastructure, and strictly adhere to their legal responsibilities to prevent further humanitarian suffering.
