Chinese investors approach SHC to seek protection from alleged police harassment, extortion

KARACHI: The Chinese investors have filed a petition in Sindh High Court against alleged police harassment and extortion.

The constitutional bench of the Sindh High Court heard the petition filed by six Chinese investors against alleged police harassment. The petition was filed against the Ministry of Interior, the Chief Secretary, the IG (Inspector General of Police), CPEC Security, Malir Police authorities, the Chinese Embassy, and others.

The petitioners have argued that they should be protected from police harassment and extortion, or else they will return to China.

The petition alleges that police demand bribes from the airport to their residences, delay them for hours at the airport under the pretext of bulletproof vehicles, and only after taking bribes, the police officials transport them in their own vehicles to their residences.

The petition also claims that at their residences, they are confined under the guise of security, with doors locked from the outside, depriving them of the freedom to move around. They are also unable to hold business meetings. After hearing the case, the court issued notices and demanded a response from the IG Sindh and other authorities within four weeks
