CJ emphasizes protection of accused rights in four-month trial completion decision in May 09 case

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi stated that the rights of the accused will be protected in the decision to complete the trial of the May 9 cases within four months.

A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Pakistan Yahya Afridi, heard the case regarding the cancellation of bail for the accused of May 9 at the Supreme Court.

During the proceedings, lawyer Latif Khosa, representing various accused from May 9, raised an objection to the order to complete the trial in four months, asking whether it had ever happened that a trial was completed in such a short time.

In response to Latif Khosa’s objection, the Chief Justice said, “Do not say that. The law mandates daily hearings of cases in anti-terrorism courts; the trial is a matter for the relevant High Court and the administrative judge.”

Lawyer Latif Khosa argued that the court’s four-month order would upset the trial. To this, the Chief Justice replied that the Supreme Court would not monitor the trial, and it would ensure that the rights of the accused are protected in the decision to complete the trial within four months.
