CJP Orders Judicial Inquiry Into Journalist Torture Case

Islamabd(May  04, 2018): Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice, Mian Saqib Nisar on Friday has ordered judicial inquiry into a case pertaining to torture on journalists.

A three-member bench conducted hearing of the suo motu notice during which, senior journalist Pervez Shaukat said that they held rally on World Press Freedom Day and police officers tortured them.

CJP said that media is fourth pillar of the society on which, Islamabad Inspector General Sultan Azam Taimuri told that section-144 is imposed in the metropolis and that NOC is legally required to hold any rally.

Journalists tried to break the barriers when barred from entering the Red Zone area, he added.CJP asked under which law protest is prohibited in Red Zone? adding that journalists were opting a peaceful protest and that its unethical to assault such protesters.

People across the world stage protest but the concerning officials are not allowed to misuse their authority, he added.Subsequently, CJP directed session judge Sohail Nasir to complete the inquiry in 10 days and submit report. He also sought explanation from deputy commission of Islamabad regarding imposition of section-144.
