Lahore (April 07, 2018): The Chief justice of Pakistan on Saturday took suo moto notice over Rs 60 billion deficit in Pakistan Railways and summoned the Federal Minister Khwaja Asif to explain the situation on April 12.
A two member bench headed by the chief justice heard the proceedings of the suo moto case in the alleged corruption in Pakistan Railways. The chief justice remarked that claims were made of the institution running on profit in the public gatherings but the situation on ground is quite different from it.
The CJP applauded the Indian Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and said that despite being an illiterate, he made the railways a profit earning institution in India.”His theory is now taught in Harvard University,” he said.
He remarked that this is not a kingdom in which the King is authorized to do whatever he wanted to and directed the minister and concerned officers to appear before the court in next hearing scheduled for April 12.
The court also directed the officials to appear before the court with relevant documents and apprise the court regarding the reasons for the losses.
Responding to the court decision in a series of tweets, Khwaja Saad Rafique said that his team has worked day and night to rid the Pakistan Railways of corruption and nepotism and has once again bring it to a far better position from past.

He said that they tell truth in public gatherings and had never claimed that Railways is earning profits but it is in far better condition with earning Rs 50 billion nowadays as compared to the past revenues of Rs 18 billion.

“The internal situation of the trains and its on-time arrival-departure has improved a lot,” he said adding that an audit report could not be a standard to judge any performance as such reports raise questions on every department but that does not prove any corruption.

The minister also said that he was deeply hurt by the judges remarks and is ready to brief the court on the situation at any time. “After briefing the court will applaud our efforts,” he said.
