CM Balochistan Sanaullah Zehri Resigns Amid Political Chaos

Quetta (January 09, 2018): In a bid to thwart ongoing political crisis in Balochistan, Sanaullah Zehri has eventually tendered resignation as Chief Minister Balochistan. The assembly session for no confidence motion is now likely to be postponed after Zehri’s decision.

The Governor Balochistan Muhammad Khan Achakzai has accepted his resignation.

The development comes after a telephonic conversation between Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Zehri during which the PM adviced him to step down.

“I’m resigning form my CM slot as per clause 8 of article 130 of the constitution,” he said while sending his resignation to governor Balochistan.CM Balochistan Sana Zehri Decides To Resign“I am feeling that several numbers of MPAs are not satisfy from my leadership, however I will continue my services for the people,” CM said.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi remained unable to create reconciliation among the members of the ruling party of the province and his two day stay went in vain.

PM Abbasi is said to have advised CM Zehri to resign after Baloch opposition leaders rejected his invitations for a meeting, during which he was expected to attempt garnering some support for the beleaguered CM.On Monday, the opposition leader in the assembly and other opposition members refused to meet the premier in Quetta. The opposition, in a news conference before the prime minister’s arrival, had announced that they would not withdraw the no-confidence motion they had moved against the CM.

The Balochistan Assembly was likely to witness a stormy session on Tuesday afternoon which has been convened to discuss the no-confidence motion against Zehri filed by the treasury benches, levelling serious allegations against his personality.

The government and the opposition both claim that they have the support of the majority to for the no-confidence motion which would be tabled in the assembly.

A no-confidence motion was submitted against Zehri on January 2 by MPAs Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo and Syed Agha Raza and had the signatures of 14 lawmakers.In order to retain his position as chief minister, Zehri required the support of 33 members from a house of 65.

A political crisis developed in Balochistan following the no-confidence motion, with efforts stepped up by the PML-N, which has a government both in the centre and province, to defuse the situation.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday afternoon, Wasay said they had the support of 41 provincial lawmakers. A day earlier, PML-Q lawmaker Abdul Quddus Bizenjo had also claimed of having the support of 40 legislators against Zehri.According to reports, ten disgruntled MPAs from the PML-N were also supposed to vote for the no-confidence motion.
