CM Maryam Nawaz unveils Phase-II of Lahore Development Plan, aims for citywide uplift

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Sunday launched the second phase of the Lahore Development Plan, marking another step in her administration’s drive to modernise the provincial capital.

The plan was approved during a review meeting chaired by the chief minister, where she directed authorities to accelerate work and maintain strict quality standards throughout the project.

Over 6,200 streets to be upgraded

According to project details, Phase II includes the comprehensive upgradation of 6,284 streets across Lahore. Of these, 5,798 streets fall under the Municipal Corporation Lahore (MCL), while 486 are under the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA).
All works are targeted for completion by June 30 next year.

Maryam Nawaz made it clear that she would “accept no compromise on the quality” of Lahore’s development and warned officials that delays would not be tolerated. She said the government’s goal was to rejuvenate every neighbourhood and restore the city’s dignity for its residents.

Once completed, she said, the rehabilitation of more than 6,000 streets would make “every locality of Lahore a source of pride for its people.”

Project linked to key Sustainable Development Goals

The development initiative will contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being

SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

SDG 13: Climate Action

Officials say the project supports improved sanitation, ensures sustainable water management, strengthens the city’s climate resilience, and offers safer, more accessible transport routes for residents and visitors.

A major component of the plan is the rehabilitation of the sewerage system, including the installation of new lines to minimise urban flooding and prevent accumulation of sewage or silt in public areas  a measure expected to reduce health risks significantly.

District-wide implementation

The development works span nine MCL zones, covering 274 union councils and benefiting an estimated 13 million people across Lahore.
