CM Sindh Writes To PM For Asma Jahangir’s State Funeral

Karachi (February 12, 2018): Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah has asked Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi seeking a state funeral for prominent lawyer and human rights icon Asma Jahangir, who passed away on Sunday.

He said this in a letter to the premier. The chief minister has also requested for the national flag to be flown at half-mast on the day of her funeral.

Jahangir’s funeral is scheduled to be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, February 13 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

The Sindh government has also announced province-wide mourning today in her memory.Former Supreme Court Bar Association President Asma Jahangir on Sunday passed away at the age of 66 years. According to reports, the veteran lawyer and human rights activist suffered a cardiac attack and could not survive.

She was a Pakistani human rights lawyer and social activist who co-founded and chaired the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. She is widely known for playing a prominent role in the Lawyers’ Movement.

Born and raised in Lahore, Jahangir studied at the Convent of Jesus and Mary before receiving her B.A from Kinnaird and LLB from the Punjab University in 1978.In 1980, Jahangir was called to the Lahore High Court and to the Supreme Court in 1982. In the 1980s, Jahangir became an democracy activist and was imprisoned in 1983 for participating in the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy against the military regime of Zia-ul-Haq.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar, former President Asif Ali Zardari, President Mamnoon Hussain paid tribute to Asma Jahangir and expressed grief.

PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz tweeted Shocked & deeply saddened to hear of Asma Jehangir’s sudden death. It is an irreparable loss. May she rest in eternal peace.
