Countrywide protests erupt in India after passage of Waqf (Amendment) Bill

New Delhi: Countrywide protests have erupted in India after the recent passage of Waqf (Amendment) Bill by Indian Parliament.

Opposition parties, Muslims and different organizations staged protests and termed the bill unconstitutional and an act against minorities.

A large number of people took to streets in Bihar, Manipur, Kolkata, Ranchi and Ahmedabad against the amendments to the Bill.

The biggest protest was seen in Manipur state, which is already burning with hatred for BJP’s polices.

Meanwhile, Indian police are on high alert in Uttar Pradesh state where additional police personnel have been deployed in several sensitive districts including Lucknow, Sambhal, Bahraich, Muradabad, Muzaffarnagar and Saharanpur.

Some political leaders have also filed petitions challenging the bill in the Indian Supreme and High Courts.

 

A large number of people took to streets in Ahmedabad, Gujrat, against the bill. According to the Indian media, Indian police torturing unarmed masses arrested more than 50 protesters.

The protests for opposing the bill were staged in Calcutta, Jharkhand including other cities of India.
