Dar and Myanmar’s FM hold extensive discussions to revitalize bilateral relations

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar engaged in extensive discussions with Myanmar’s Foreign Minister Than Swe on Monday, signaling a renewed effort to strengthen bilateral relations after years of limited high-level exchanges. Than Swe arrived in Pakistan on January 24 for a four-day official visit aimed at broadening political, economic, and cultural cooperation.

During a joint press conference following their meeting, Dar described the talks as comprehensive and productive, emphasizing the importance both nations place on revitalizing their relationship. The discussions, lasting over an hour, covered the full range of bilateral issues, including regional peace and security. Both ministers underscored the necessity of resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.

The talks also focused on enhancing collaboration in trade, humanitarian efforts, and cultural exchanges. Dar highlighted the untapped potential in political and commercial partnerships, proposing sustained, structured engagement to unlock new opportunities. Recognizing the significance of people-to-people connections, both sides stressed the importance of academic collaboration, youth engagement, and cultural exchange programs. Dar pointed to the shared Buddhist heritage as a foundation for promoting religious tourism to deepen ties and improve connectivity.

The two leaders also discussed cooperation in capacity building, development initiatives, and consular support, particularly addressing cross-border crime and online scams affecting their nationals. Humanitarian efforts and stronger collaboration in mitigating such challenges were key areas of focus.

Following the discussions, Pakistan and Myanmar signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on political consultations between their foreign ministries. This agreement aims to institutionalize regular dialogue and serve as a mechanism for addressing issues at bilateral, regional, and international levels.

Earlier in the day, Dar formally welcomed Than Swe at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and highlighted the long-standing ties between Islamabad and Naypyidaw. He acknowledged a gap in senior-level exchanges, noting that Myanmar’s last leadership visit to Pakistan occurred in 2015, while Pakistan’s top-level visit to Myanmar dates back to 2012. Dar reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to reinvigorating cooperation through practical initiatives and expressed optimism that Myanmar’s ongoing political process would foster stability, development, and inclusive governance.

Than Swe extended gratitude for the invitation and hospitality received in Pakistan, emphasizing his country’s desire to expand both bilateral and multilateral relations. He mentioned that pre-departure consultations within Myanmar showcased robust interest in identifying new areas of partnership. Reflecting on the shared colonial history of both nations, he noted that Myanmar had consistently maintained cordial relations with Pakistan since their independence.

Both sides expressed confidence that the Islamabad discussions would set the stage for stronger collaboration in the years to come.
