Dar urges US-Iran ceasefire compliance as Islamabad talks wrap up

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has emphasized the urgent need for both the United States and Iran to honor the ceasefire, following the conclusion of high-level talks in Islamabad.

Speaking at the close of the discussion, Dar underscored that maintaining the truce is critical for regional stability, calling it “imperative” for both sides to stay committed. He also expressed optimism that continued engagement could pave the way for long-term peace and economic stability across the region.

Dar thanked both Tehran and Washington for responding to the ceasefire appeal made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and for agreeing to hold negotiations in Pakistan’s capital. He noted that the US delegation, led by JD Vance, and the Iranian team headed by Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, participated in multiple rounds of discussions over nearly 24 hours.

Highlighting Pakistan’s mediating role, Dar said he worked closely with military leadership, including Syed Asim Munir, to facilitate what he described as “intense but constructive” negotiations.

He reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to diplomacy, stating that Pakistan will continue to support dialogue between the two sides in the coming days. “We hope both parties maintain a positive spirit to achieve durable peace and prosperity,” he said.

Ongoing Tensions Despite Ceasefire

The conflict, which erupted on February 28 following coordinated US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, has claimed over 2,000 lives and triggered widespread instability. Iran responded with retaliatory actions, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on US and Israeli interests.

Although a ceasefire was announced on April 8 with Pakistan’s mediation, key disputes remain unresolved. Washington has proposed a broad framework addressing nuclear and missile concerns, sanctions relief, and freedom of navigation, while Tehran has pushed for sanctions removal, reparations, and greater control over the vital shipping route.

Despite the lack of a final agreement, Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts have drawn international recognition, with many countries backing its role in reducing tensions and encouraging continued toward a lasting settlement.
