KARACHI: The Sindh Minister for Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, revealed plans to introduce a double-decker bus service as a gift for Karachi residents on the occasion of the New Year.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, Memon explained that this service would initially operate on a trial basis with limited routes. For now, the double-decker buses will run from Sharea Faisal to Malir.
When questioned about the fare structure, Memon confirmed that it would be aligned with the rates of the existing People’s Bus Service.
He also mentioned discussions with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah regarding the future expansion of the service, with plans to add more double-decker buses in the coming phases.
Highlighting its potential benefits, Memon pointed out that double-decker buses can significantly reduce road congestion by optimizing space usage, paving the way for smoother traffic flow in the city.
In another significant development, he announced that passengers can now travel on both the Orange Line and Green Line BRT services using a unified card. This advancement establishes Karachi as Pakistan’s pioneering city to implement an integrated card system across multiple BRT lines.
Memon reiterated the provincial government’s commitment to improving transportation facilities and stated that these initiatives are designed to enhance convenience for the city’s residents.
Addressing delays in the Red Line BRT project, the transport minister admitted to challenges encountered during its construction but assured that the chief minister had resolved these issues, leading to an accelerated pace of work.
