ISLAMABAD: Early Tuesday morning, police conducted a raid at Quaid-i-Azam University’s hostels in the federal capital, leading to the arrest of several students following a complaint from the university administration.
According to details provided by university officials, students were asked to leave the hostels by July 13 to facilitate maintenance activities planned during the summer break. While many students had already vacated the premises, others received multiple notices and deadlines to do so. The final deadline having passed, authorities proceeded with eviction.
The Islamabad police added that “legal support was extended upon the university’s request.”Though students had vacated 11 hostels, four remained occupied without authorization, prompting the university to report illegal residency. Those who resisted the evacuation process were removed, and further legal action is expected based on the university’s directives.
Human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir claimed that up to 72 students have been detained in connection with the matter. She stated, “We plan to meet with the vice chancellor to address these issues,” while speaking to Geo News outside the police station.Additionally, the university’s Vice Chancellor’s Office has been locked down amid ongoing student protests.“The VC Secretariat has been shut due to the demonstrations,” the university administration confirmed.
