DPM clarifies Pakistan’s position on Trump’s Gaza peace plan; affirms no ownership of 20-point proposal

ISLAMABAD: In a recent session of the National Assembly, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized that Pakistan does not endorse the 20-point Gaza peace plan introduced by U.S. President Donald Trump. Dar explained that the plan was not Pakistan’s own document, noting that modifications had been made to Pakistan’s original draft something he personally oversees and has documented. He reaffirmed that Pakistan’s stance remains firmly aligned with Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s policy, advocating for an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar detailed that during the UN General Assembly, eight Arab and Muslim nations convened discreetly in New York to discuss the Gaza crisis. The preparatory meetings, held before the main session, focused solely on Gaza, with the U.S. showing positive engagement and promising to work with the foreign ministers for a feasible solution. Trump reportedly planned a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to halt Gaza’s bombardment.

The foreign ministers discussed the 20-point proposal presented by Trump’s team, deciding to work within that framework rather than creating an entirely new draft. Over the next 24 hours, they exchanged hard copies of the draft in hotel rooms, ultimately sending a collective “counter draft” to the U.S. and other involved nations. Dar recounted that shortly after their departure from New York, some countries pushed for all eight foreign ministers to sign the document, while others deemed it unnecessary. Despite some differences, the majority decision was made, and the draft was handed over to the Americans.

A meeting between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu resulted in the announcement of the 20-point plan. Dar mentioned discussions with the Saudi foreign minister, who indicated that the urgent points proposed by the eight countries were accepted, though some issues required further dialogue. Ultimately, a joint statement was issued on September 29, emphasizing that practical steps, not just statements, are essential to ending the Gaza conflict, praising the efforts of participating nations.

Pakistan-Saudi Arabia Strategic Agreement: A Step Toward Regional Security

Dar highlighted Pakistan’s strategic pact with Saudi Arabia, which explicitly states that any attack on one will be considered an assault on the other. He described this as a proud moment for Pakistan, positioning itself as a defender of the holy sites in Harmain Sharifain. Several other Islamic nations have shown interest in forging similar alliances with Pakistan, he added.

He expressed confidence that Pakistan’s future lies in leadership within the Islamic world, emphasizing that although the country is already a nuclear and missile power, economic strength must now be prioritized through collective effort.

Israeli Interventions and Pakistan’s Efforts for Citizen Repatriation

Addressing the detention of former Senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan and other Pakistanis by Israeli forces, Dar revealed that approximately 45 humanitarian aid flotillas were intercepted by Israel, with Mushtaq Ahmed Khan detained from one of 25 vessels. He assured the House that Pakistan is actively working through diplomatic channels, engaging an influential European country to secure the safe return of all detainees, including the ex-senator.

Dar explained that 22 ships have been seized by Israel, with all passengers detained. The European country, whose name he did not disclose, has assured that they will update Pakistan on Mushtaq Khan’s condition by Sunday, and efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe and respectful repatriation of all Pakistani citizens.

Lawmakers’ Walkout and Clarification on UN Delegation

Members of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) staged a walkout from the National Assembly in protest over remarks made by Punjab’s Chief Minister. Naveed Qamar stated they would boycott the proceedings until their concerns are addressed.

In a separate incident, Dar responded to opposition allegations about Shama Junejo’s involvement in a United Nations delegation. He clarified that Junejo was not part of the official Foreign Ministry’s delegation but was included in a separate Prime Minister’s delegation, which often comprises staff and officials to assist with various responsibilities. Dar dismissed the controversy as exaggerated, emphasizing that her participation was legitimate and procedural.
