Dry, Foggy conditions persist in Karachi as air quality deteriorates

KARACHI: The port city is experiencing dry and dusty weather accompanied by cool temperatures, fog during the early morning and night hours, and comparatively warmer conditions during the day, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

The Met Office reported that the minimum temperature was recorded at 18°C, while the maximum is expected to range between 28°C and 30°C. Humidity levels remain high at around 90 percent.

Light northeastern winds are blowing across the city at a speed of approximately four kilometres per hour. Dense fog has significantly reduced visibility, which has dropped to as low as 97 metres in some areas.

Meanwhile, Karachi’s air quality has reached alarming levels. The city currently ranks third among the world’s most polluted cities, as per the Air Quality Index.

Particulate matter pollution has been measured at 228, placing air quality in an unhealthy category. According to the Commission for Air Quality Management, the deteriorating conditions are the result of increased moisture and changes in wind patterns, which prevent pollutants from dispersing and contribute to smog formation.
