Dumper kills newlywed Shahzaib; furious masses put dumper on fire

KARACHI: A tragic accident occurred on Nishter Road, Karachi, where a speeding dumper collided with a motorcycle, leading to the death of a young man, Shahzaib, and injuries to his wife. The devastating incident caused widespread outrage among residents, who responded by setting the dumper ablaze. Law enforcement later detained the driver and three others connected to the vehicle.

Police reported that 25-year-old Shahzaib, a cloth trader residing in the Garden area, suffered severe injuries, with his face badly mutilated. He had been married just four months prior to the accident.

The aftermath saw residents pouring onto the streets in protest, intensifying their anger by burning the dumper involved. Firefighters later brought the flames under control. Tensions escalated further when Dumper Association leader Liaqat Mehsood arrived at the scene accompanied by armed guards. Amid chants against him and demands for justice, witnesses claim his guards fired shots into the air, sparking panic. The group quickly fled the area after the outburst.

Shortly afterward, in a related unrest, protesters ignited another dumper in Garden’s Ram Swami neighborhood. Mehsood later alleged he was attacked during the incident and declared plans for a protest, threatening to block the National Highway.

In connection with the events, the police arrested the dumper’s driver along with three other individuals and confiscated the vehicle. Two first information reports (FIRs) were registered—one by Shahzaib’s father and another by social worker Abdul Qadir Memon. The FIRs outlined accusations against Mehsood and his associates, alleging that his guards intimidated citizens by firing shots and using police sirens on their vehicles to instill fear.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori expressed his concern over the situation and condemned such acts of intimidation involving firearms. He directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take decisive action, promising Shahzaib’s family that justice would be served.
