ECP adjourns hearing of references for Imran, Tarin disqualification till June 5

Islamabad (May 10, 2017): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday adjourned the hearings of references seeking the disqualification of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and Jehangir Tareen till June 5.

The five-member bench of the ECP headed by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan heard the references filed by PML-N leader Talal Chaudhry and Muhammad Khan Daya.

Sikander Bashir Advocate represented Imran Khan while Akram Sheikh appeared for Talal Chaudhry. At the outset of the hearing, the CEC asked whether any case of this nature was pending in Supreme Court.  Upon this, Akram Sheikh replied that the petitioners were different in SC and the ECP, adding that the charges against PTI chief in the instant matter and in the petition in SC were also different.

The Chief Election Commissioner added that the instant matter might not impact the case pending in SC, adding that earlier too they had adjourned a similar case for indefinite period for being pending in SC.

The ECP adjourned the hearing of the case till June 5, 2017>

Chaudhry in his reference has sought disqualification of the PTI chairman on the grounds that he submitted falsified financial statements regarding the purchase of his Bani Gala residence along with his electoral papers.

Daha has alleged that Jehangir Tareen should be disqualified on the grounds of the allegations against him regarding an irregular write-off of an outstanding loan. The petition alleges that during Pervez Musharaf’s regime, Tareen had secured a Rs101 million loan from the Zarai Taraqiati Bank (ZTBL) for Tandlianwala Sugar Mills in his capacity as a federal minister. The loan was later written off in 2005.
