ECP Dismisses Petition Seeking Imran Disqualification

Islamabad (August 21, 2017): Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday dismissed a petition seeking disqualification of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan on non-persecution.

A 5-member bench of ECP headed by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan heard a reference filed by one Hashim Ali Bhutta seeking disqualification of Imran Khan for collecting fund for party through ‘prohibited sources’.

When the ECP bench resumed the hearing, the application or his counsel did not appear before the bench.

Upon this the ECP dismissed the petition for non-persecution.

Hashim Ali Bhutta had filed the references in ECP against Imran alleging that PTI had collected party funds from ‘prohibited sources’.

With his petition, Mr Bhutta had attached some documents claiming that the PTI had received around $3 million through various sources in Texas and California in the US.

Bhutta’s counsel, Sharafat Chaudhry, during previous hearings had argued that Imran Khan, being the party head, had submitted a certificate from 2010 to 2015 stating that the PTI had not collected funds through “prohibited means”, whereas he had submitted the evidence that the PTI funds were collected through “prohibited” means.

As PTI chief submitted fake certificate, so he is not qualified to be member of National Assembly under Article 62 and 63 of the constitution. He had pleaded the ECP to declare PTI chief  disqualified to be member of Parliament.
