Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) huddle called after the Supreme Court (SC) yesterday verdict directing the election body to hold elections in Punjab on May 14.
Yesterday, the SC, hearing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) petition against the ECP decision to delay the elections in Punjab and KP till October 8, announced its reserved verdict annulling the ECP decision.
The today’s meeting of the ECP in the Chair of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja will review the SC verdict regarding general elections in Punjab.
The legal team of the ECP will brief the huddle. While the ECP members, secretary and special secretary are in attendance.
Supreme Court Verdict On PTI Petitions Against ECP On Delaying Elections In Punjab
Supreme Court has annulled the Election Commission of Pakistan decision of March 22 while the top court restored the election schedule.
The SC in its verdict has ordered the ECP to hold elections in Punjab on May 14. In the judgement, the SC has made some changes in the election schedule.
As per the SC verdict nominations papers will be collected till April 10 while the final lists of the candidate will be issued on April 19. The verdict directed that the Election symbols will be allotted on April 20.
Polling in Punjab will be held on May 14.
The SC has ordered the government to provide funds of Rs 21 billion to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) till April 10 while it directed the ECP to submit report of receiving funds on April 11 to SC bench members.
In case the government don’t provide fund to the ECP than the SC will issue appropriate order.
The SC decision of holding elections is for Punjab only.
The top court also called Security plan from Inspector General (IG) Punjab till April 10. While the court instructed the Punjab government to provide complete cooperation by fulfilling its constitutional responsibility.
The federal government must provide assistance to the ECP at all cost as per the SC verdict. The court in its verdict also issued instructions to the Federal government for provision of armed forces, FC, Rangers including all security. Whereas Chief Secretary and IG Punjab will provide security plan till April 10 at all cost.
According to the SC verdict the federal government will provide security plan to the ECP till April 17.
The three member bench in its verdict said that our attention were drawn towards verdict of March 1 of 3\2. The verdict clarified that the SC has not given verdict regarding elections in KP adding that while not assistance to court provided for holding of elections in KP.
The court directed that for holding of elections in KP a new petition be filed in the SC.
The SC also declared Justice Qazi Faez Isa verdict ineffective.
