ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced an updated timetable for the upcoming local government elections in the capital city on Friday.
According to the revised plan, voting for union council seats is scheduled for February 15. The deadline for submitting nomination papers has been extended to December 30. The initial list of candidates will be made public on December 31, 2025.
Nomination papers will undergo scrutiny from January 1 to January 6, 2026. Candidates can file appeals against any rejection or acceptance of nominations between January 7 and January 10, with the resolution of these appeals expected between January 12 and January 15. The final list of eligible candidates will be released on January 16, and the deadline for withdrawing nominations is set for January 17.
Election symbols will be assigned to candidates on January 19, as per the schedule announced by the ECP.
Earlier, the Federal Constitutional Court had issued notices to Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, the Election Commission, and other concerned parties, requesting written responses regarding the matter. The court has postponed the hearing until the third week of January 2026 but has maintained the current schedule and put the Balochistan High Court’s decision on hold.
During the hearing, Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan questioned the logic behind holding elections that might later be invalidated or declared void.
