ECP suggests reforms to guarantee timely local govt elections

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has put forward a set of proposed amendments to the Constitution and the Election Act 2017, aimed at ensuring the smooth and prompt conduct of local government elections across the country.

Sources reveal that the ECP has recommended changes to Article 140-A of the Constitution to address tactics that might cause delays in local elections, with the goal of maintaining continuous governance at the local level without unnecessary interruptions.

One key proposal mandates that local government elections must be held within 120 days of the expiration of the current local bodies’ term. Additionally, the ECP has suggested restricting any modifications to constituency boundaries during the final year of a local government’s tenure to avoid disruptions to the election schedule.

The commission has submitted these proposals to the federal government for review and approval, emphasizing the need for timely electoral processes at the local level.
