Eiffel Tower Turns 130 Years Old

PARIS: The Eiffel Tower, France’s most iconic monument, celebrated its 130th birthday on Sunday (March 31) under a sunny Parisian blue sky as crowds of visitors queued to get a closer look at the iron structure or even a panoramic view of the city from the top.

Rising 324 meters (1,063 feet) above Paris, the famed “Iron Lady” was designed by Parisian engineer Gustave Eiffel and built for the 1889 Universal Exhibition.

The construction of the most famous of Parisian monuments took two years, two months and five days, which was considered a technical prowess at the time, and mobilized between 300 and 450 workers.

Since then, the Eiffel tower has been undergoing several improvements and renovations.

Seven million tourists visit the Eiffel Tower each year and 300 million have come from all over the world to discover it since 1889.
