DAMASCUS: President Ahmed Al-Sharaa has announced that national elections could be delayed for up to five years.
Syrian Arab Republic President Ahmed Al-Sharaa said, national elections could take as long as five years. This announcement comes just a week after he was appointed as interim president and less than two months following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad.
“Estimated time will take approximately four to five years before elections can be held, as there is a significant need to rebuild and establish essential infrastructure, which will require considerable time and effort”, told President Ahmed Al-Sharaa
He further said that, “Syrian authorities must unify population data in order to refresh electoral information. Without addressing this issue, the legitimacy of any elections conducted will be questioned”.
He also promised “a law regulating political parties,” adding that Syria would be “a republic with a parliament and an executive government.”
Military commanders last Wednesday appointed Sharaa interim president, after opposition factions toppled Assad on December 8, ending more than five decades of the family’s iron-fisted rule.
