ISLAMABAD: The 13th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit is about to start in Islamabad which is being chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Addressing the inaugural session, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev announced to elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as chairman of ECO.
Aliyev said that two ECO summit had so far been held in Azerbaijan.
The summit will approve Islamabad Declaration and adopt ECO Vision 2025.
The heads of states of Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan are participating in the summit while Kyrgyzstan’s Prime Minister is representing his country. Afghanistan is the only country which did not sent any high profile official to the summit and its ambassador to Islamabad will represent the country.
China, United Nations and OIC are participating in the summit as observer. The Summit will approve ECO Vision 2025.
The theme of the 13th Summit is “Connectivity for Regional Prosperity”, which assumes special significance in the backdrop of monumental project of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
On the occasion of the summit, special security arrangements have been made in the federal capital. The Red Zone of the capital has completely been sealed. Some six thousands police personnel, Rangers and Army jawans have been deployed in the capital to ensure foolproof security for the summit.
