NA rejects Bill demanding inquiry of everyone named in Panama Papers

Islamabad(May 16, 2017):  A vast majority in the National Assembly on Tuesday rejected a PPP bill demanding an inquiry into every Pakistani named in the Panama Papers. The Law Minister said that opposition’s Panama Papers bill is conspiracy and the motive behind this is to give tough time to Sharif Family only.

Minister for Law Zahid Hamid strongly opposed the bill, tabled by Naveed Qamar, saying there is no need for such proceedings as the matter had already been taken care of in the Supreme Court.

“The SC has already ruled on the case; there is no need for this bill anymore,” Hamid said.

Qamar, on the other hand, maintained that the bill should not be rejected based only on the fact that the words ‘Panama Papers’ have been used in it, “The court case only dealt with one family, while this bill will open the doors of inquiry into everyone involved in the Panama Papers.”

The bill was rejected after a vast majority in the NA voted against it.

During the session, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shireen Mazari said that Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar had termed the matter against national security and put all the blame on Tariq Fatemi.

PTI’s Asad Umar said that decision on Dawn Leaks issue should be taken in Parliament as this news has defamed the country’s name at international level.

Parliament has authority to make foreign policy, he added.

Opposition parties on Tuesday have demanded to present inquiry report on Dawn Leaks in National Assembly (NA) for proper investigation.
