Karachi (May 23, 2017): A great Urdu poet, lyricist and songwriter, Majrooh Sultanpuri is being remembered at his 17th death anniversary today.
Majrooh Sultanpuri was born as Asrar ul Hassan Khan in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh in 1920. He was one of the dominating musical forces in Indian Cinema in the 1950s and early 1960s and was an important figure in the Progressive Writers’ Movement.
Majrooh Sultanpuri is considered one of the finest avant-garde Urdu poets of 20th century literature.His early and best-known independent poetry was in the ghazal form.
He made his film debut with the K.L.Saigal starrer Shahjehan (1946). But his major breakthrough was Mehboob Khan’s Andaaz (1949).
He continued writing spirited and lilting lyrics till the late 90’s and is widely regarded as one of the foremost lyricists of the sub-continent.
Majrooh Sultanpuri had a severe attack of pneumonia and died in Bombay on 24 May 2000. In his career spanning over five decades, he wrote over 2000 songs for films and published 5 collections of poetry.
Sunday marks the 15th death anniversary of the versatile lyricist-poet Majrooh Sultanpuri. He gave us some of the best melodies, chirpy songs and romantic numbers of Hindi cinema.
