Sufi Poet Sachal Sarmast Urs Celebrations Begin

Ranipur(June 10, 2017): A 3-day 196th Annual Urs of Sufi saint and poet of Sindh, Hazrat Sachal Sarmast begin at Daraza Sharif near Ranipur. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has inaugurated the annual Urs by laying floral wreath on the shrine.

This activity would be followed by Adabi conference and Sachal Yadgar Committee would also present shields to eminent poets, singers and writers.

Sachal Sarmast wrote poetry in 7 languages, most prominently in Sindhi, during the Kalhoro/Talpur era in Sindh and was born in Daraza, near Ranipur.

His real name was Abdul Wahab Farouqi and was also nicknamed “Sachal” or “Sachoo.” He used a pen-name for his poetry, Sachu means ‘truthful’ – while in Sindhi Sarmast means ‘ecstatic’ in Sindhi and Urdu alike. Sachal Sarmast literally means ‘truthful mystic’ or can be translated as “Ecstatic Saint of Truth.”

Sachal’s father Mian Salahuddin died when he was a child. He was later raised by his uncle, Pir Khawaja Abdul Haq I, who also became his spiritual master. He married his uncle’s daughter, but the young woman died two years later.

He never remarried. It is said that he never left Daraza. Sachal’s poetical works are sung by local singers in Sindhi and Siraiki; his shrine is in the village Daraza, near Ranipur, Khairpur District, Sindh, Pakistan.
