Taking to Twitter on Saturday, Imran said, “This book should be read by Pakistanis to understand why we are treated with so little respect internationally.”Raymond Davis — the CIA operative who sparked a diplomatic row after gunning down two men on the streets of Lahore in January 2011 – has penned his side of the story for the first time in a memoir titled ‘The Contractor: How I Landed in a Pakistani Prison and Ignited a Diplomatic Crisis’.

Imran also criticized Pakistan’s top military and political leadership for their role in the release of Raymond Davis and termed it a ‘shameful’ act.

“A shameful account of how our top political and military leadership collaborated to let a cold blooded killer, responsible for 4 deaths, go scot-free.”

According to Davis, John Kerry, Nawaz Sharif, Asif Zardari, former ISI chief Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha and Husain Haqqani helped in his release from the Kot Lakhpat Jail.Apart from the ISI chief, several other officials of the intelligence agency were present in the court at the time of his release, he notes in the book.

The violent episode escalated into a diplomatic crisis, making front-page headlines across the world and straining ties between Islamabad and Washington, as US policymakers pressed for diplomatic immunity for Davis and pushed for his immediate release.

The memoir released on June 27, 2017 has stirred intense debate across Pakistan and the worldwide. The former spy, Raymond Davis, had shot two men in Lahore on January 27, 2011, while a third man was killed by a vehicle coming to rescue him. His arrest and following developments ignited a diplomatic crisis between Pakistan and the United States. In less than two months, Raymond Davis was released on March 16, 2011, after the families of the two killed men received $2.4 million as blood money. He then immediately returned to the US.

A fresh debate has erupted in Pakistan, particularly on the social media, about the role of a former ISI chief General retired Pasha in the whole episode.

Raymond Davis has bailed out all the politicians of having any role in his controversial release and mentioned in his book that it was the-then ISI chief General Ahmad Shuja Pasha who was calling the shots to get him out of the jail.

Davis has exonerated Asif Ali Zardari, Yousaf Raza Gilani, Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Rana Sanullah while he has written a ‘rumor’ that Zardari and Mian Nawaz Sharif knew about his release deal but has not mentioned any role of these two in his release.

Davis has written that despite having good relations with the US, Asif Ali Zardari and Yousaf Raza Gilani were reluctant to declare his diplomatic immunity.

According to an Amazon.com introduction, the book offers “an up-close and personal look at the 2011 incident in Lahore, Pakistan, that led to his imprisonment and the events that took place as diplomats on both sides of the bargaining table scrambled to get him out”.
