Paris(September 6, 2017): Police in France said the 38-year mystery of a stolen car was solved when a drought caused the water to recede in a swamp.
Police in Chalons-en-Champagne said a property owner contacted authorities Aug. 28 to report a muddy pond on their property had receded amid a recent drought and revealed the top of a Peugeot 104 buried in the swamp.
The car was pulled from the swamp after divers verified there was no trace of a body inside, and police determined the car had been reported stolen from its third owner in 1979.
Mechanic Franck Menard told that crayfish-covered vehicle was remarkably well-preserved, despite apparently spending decades buried in the muck.
Police said the car’s owner was surprised to hear the “cold case” had been resolved. They said the car is technically the property of the woman’s insurance company since she filed a claim when it was stolen, but she is expected to visit the vehicle at Menard’s garage to see what has become of her former car.
