2nd T20: Rohit’s 35-Ball Century Powers India to Record Against SL

Indore (December 22, 2017): In-form India skipper Rohit Sharma powered India to a record 260/5 against Sri Lanka in the second Twenty20 International in Indore on Friday. It is India’s highest total in the shortest format of the game and joint second highest with Sri Lanka (260/6 vs Kenya in 2007).

Rohit (118) and KL Rahul (89) shared an India record 165 runs for the opening wicket as Indian batsmen hit boundaries at will. In all, India smashed an astonishing 21 sixes and 21 fours in their innings.

Rohit slammed hundred off just 35 balls to equal the world record held by David Miller of South Africa. Rohit hit eight sixes and 11 fours to reach the landmark as he and his opening partner Rahul toyed with hapless Sri Lanka attack.

Rohit eventually got out on 118 off 43 balls, which included 10 sixes and 12 fours, while Rahul missed out a chance to score his second century in T20Is as he got out in the penultimate over for 89 off 49 balls. Rahul hit eight sixes and five fours.

Rohit’s century is the fastest by an Indian across format. And it came after the mercurial Mumbai batsman scored his record-extending third double ton in ODIs against the same opponent with 208 not out off 153 deliveries in the second one-day international in Mohali.

MS Dhoni also contributed 28, which came off 21 balls with the help of two sixes and two fours.

India lead the three-match series 1-0 after winning the first match by a record 93 runs on Wednesday.
