Hobart (February 07, 2018) Glenn Maxwell made an unbeaten century to guide Australia to a five-wicket victory over England in the Trans-Tasman T20I tri-series on Tuesday.
Maxwell (103*) reached his ton and smashed the winning runs with a six off Mark Wood but England will feel the game was lost earlier than that.England got off to a good start powered by a Dawid Malan (50) half-century but after an excellent beginning, they lost their way somewhat in the middle overs.
Only Alex Hales (22) and Eoin Morgan (22) joined Malan in passing 20 though and their total was always going to be a little light.Maxwell started his day with a brilliant two over spell that saw him return figures of 3/10.England slipped from 94 for 2 to 137 for 9 and would eventually hobble to 155/9 in their 20 overs.
In reply Australia lost skipper David Warner after just two balls, he spanked the first down the ground for four and attacked again the next delivery but could only find deep square leg and David Willey had an early scalp.
Willey struck again just two balls later when he castled Chris Lynn for a duck to ignite hopes they could defend their meagre target with the hosts 4 for 2.That was before Maxwell took the game by the scruff of the neck assisted by D’Arcy Short (30) and the lower order.
The century was Maxwell’s second in T20Is after his 145 not out against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. Australia got over the line with nine balls to spare.
