5.3 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Islamabad, Peshawar

Islamabad (September 14, 2018): A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck the federal capital Islamabad, Peshawar and its suburbs in the wee hours of Friday.

The epicenter of the quake was located in Koh-e-Hindukush area of Afghanistan, said Pakistan Meteorological Department.

There was no immediate report of any damage to life or property as a result of the quake. According to reports, people rushed out of their homes and shops and other buildings after the tremor.Earlier on January 31, a two-year-old minor girl was died and three sustained injuries as a powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Islamabad and various cities of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan on Wednesday.

According to details, the casualty occurred in Balochistan’s Lasbela district where the roof of a dilapidated house collapsed after the quake.

Intense earthquakes also felt in the region of Bela in Balochistan, emergency has been declared in Civil Hospital.

According to the geological wing of Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), tremors measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale were felt in Islamabad, Swat, Mingora, Landi Kotal, Batkhela, Malakand, Abbottabad, Peshawar and surroundings.

Strong tremors also shook Lahore, Quetta, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Sargodha, Jhelum, Nankana, Chiniot, Muzaffarabad, Lasbela, Safdarabad, Sharaqpur, Dir, and Mianwali where frightened residents ran out of homes while offices and schools were quickly evacuated.

Residents come out on streets after earthquake in Dir.

Officials dispatched teams in Balochistan and nearby Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to assess reports of damage. However the National Disaster Management Authority did not expect serious losses, a spokesman said.

Parliament sessions in Islamabad have been postponed due to the tremors. The Supreme Court has also halted its hearing.
