Web Desk (August 01, 2018): 85th birth anniversary of Bollywood’s ‘Tragedy Queen’ is being observed today.
Meena Kumari was born in Mumbai on August 01, 1933. Her birth name was Mahjabeen Bano, but she receives her part of fame as Meena Kumari, in film industry.
She became the part of film industry at a very young age. She was not only a great actress, but also an amazing singer and poet, which is why she was commonly known as ‘Tragedy Queen’ and ‘Hindi Cinderella’.
Meena Kumari won many hearts with her grace and great acting skills. She started working as a child artiste at the age of 4 and was popularly known as Baby Meena. Her first lead role came at the age of 13 in 1946 with the film Bachchon Ka Khel.
Meena Kumari went on to set milestones in Indian cinema with her roles in Pakeezah, Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam, Parineeta, Daera, Azaad, Kajal, Ek Dil Mandir, Char Dil Char Rahen, Phool Pathar, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi.
On 14 February 1952 Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi got married in a simple Nikkah ceremony, which didn’t lasted long.
Apart from her film career, she was also quite successful as a singer. Some of her songs including ‘Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh’, ‘Sarrey Raah Chalte Chalte’, ‘Inhi Logon Ne Le Liya Dupatta Mera’, ‘Wo Milte They Kabhi Humse’, ‘Tukrey Tukrey Din Beeta’ are still quite popular among fans.
1972 released Pakeezah was her most successful film and enjoyed a successful run of 33 weeks and even celebrated its silver jubilee. She posthumously received her twelfth and last Filmfare nomination for Pakeezah. Songs of the film and her dance was quite appreciated. 
Just three weeks after Pakeezah’s release, Meena Kumari was critically ill. She slid into a coma and died on March 31, 1972. Liver cirrhosis was determined to be the cause of her death.
