ISLAMABAD: The 88th birth anniversary of famous Urdu poet Ahmed Faraz is being celebrated today.
Ahmed Faraz was born on January 12, 1931, in Kohat. From his early school life, he was praised for his poetry. In spite of having family terms with Faiz Ahmed Faiz, he had his own unique name in poetry.
Ahmed Faraz completed his Master’s Degree in Urdu and Persian from Peshawar University.
13 famous collections of Ahmed Faraz are Tanha Tanha, Dard Ashob, Nayaft, Shab-e-Khoon, Mery Khuaab Raiza Raiza, Jana Jana, Be Awaz Gully Kochoon Mein, Nabeena Sheher Mein Ayina, Sab Awazein Meri Hain, Pas Andaz-e-mosam, Bodlak, Ghazal Bahana Karon and Aye Ashq Jinow Paisha. His Kulliyat are published with the name of “Sheher-e-Sukhn Arasta”.
Faraz was arrested for writing poems that criticized military rulers in Pakistan during the reign of General Zia-ul-Haq. The Poet returned the Hilal-e-Imtiaz he received in 2004 after becoming disenchanted with Musharraf’s government and its policies.
The Poet Ahmed Faraz died on 25 August 2008 in Islamabad. He is buried in Central Graveyard Islamabad.
