Lahore (December 26, 2018): The funeral prayers for Ali Raza Abidi, who was assassinated late last night, will be offered after Zuhr prayers today at Imam Bargah Yasrab.

It has been learnt that Abidi had gone there to meet his relatives and had just sat in his car after meeting them, when unknown assailants opened fire on the vehicle.

“It was premature to conclude whether the assailants were riding a bike or a car,” he said.Police and Rangers personnel cordoned off the site of the attack and are collecting evidence.

Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Syed Kaleem Imam took notice of the incident and sought a report from police authorities.

This comes two days after two Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) workers were gunned down in Usmania Society.

“This is to bring to your attention that I will not be able to continue participation with MQM Pakistan due to personal reasons,” he had said in his resignation letter to MQM-P Convenor Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.

Abidi was one of the leaders who had stood with former convener Farooq Sattar in the buildup to 2018 elections when MQM-P was subject to an internal power battle.

He was the owner of the famous Karachi eatery, Biryani of the Seas.

Abidi was quite active on Twitter, with his last tweet coming just four hours before the fatal attack on him.

Profile

Former MQM lawmaker and Former Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Syed Ali Raza Abidi’s affiliation with MQM goes back to the 1988, when he was a student of SM Commerce College. When the army operation against the party started, Abidi – who had seen several tortured bodies of his colleagues – distanced himself from politics.

Although he went to the United States for his undergraduate degree in science and business management from Boston University, he had once said that he was in touch with what was going on back home. “It was disturbing at time and I felt helpless.”

After coming back in 1998, he chose to be an entrepreneur – he was part of distributing Walls ice cream, and later joined the seafood processing business Biryani of the Seas (BOTS) run by the family.Abidi’s father, Syed Ikhlaq Hussain Abidi, was also actively involved with the MQM and was an MNA from NA-250.

Abidi jumped back into active politics in 2008, and formed the Professionals Research and Advisory Council (PRAC) for MQM.

His career in politics began in 2013 when he was given the ticket by MQM to contest elections. Being his first time in elections he was able to win and got himself a seat in the national assembly.

However, there was some controversy surrounding his seat as a MNA as he allegedly resigned from his position recently when he joined Pak Sarzameen Party and thus left MQM.

He was member of the National Assembly, from June 2013 to May 2018.He was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan as a candidate of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) from Constituency NA-251 (Karachi-XIII) in Pakistani general election, 2013. He received 81,603 votes and defeated Raja Azhar Khan, a candidate of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The former MQM leader was a well-educated politician and did his immediate schooling from Karachi St. Patrick School. He got his B.com degree from DHA Degree College and I.com degree from S.M Commerce College. Then he went to states to complete his marketing degree from Boston University.

Ali Raza Abidi had plenty of experience in marketing sector and was the CEO of Akhlaq enterprises.
