AC Adjourns Hearing of Cases Against Nawaz, Maryam Till 1pm

Islamabad (December 4, 2017): The Accountability Court hearing National Accountability Bureau’s references against disqualified prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam, and her husband Capt (r) Safdar  for accumulating assets beyond known sources of income has adjourned the hearing of the case till 1:00 pm today as the Islamabad High Court is set to announce its verdict on Nawaz’s plea to club together all references against him.

Nawaz Sharif, Maryam, and Capt (r) Safdar appeared before the court amid stringent security in and around the Judicial Complex which houses the court.

Nawaz and Maryam, who arrived in federal capital earlier today by air from Lahore, went straight to the court from Benazir International Airport Islamabad. They were greeted by a large number of party workers, supporters, and sympathisers who chanted slogans in favor of the ousted prime minister.

The accountability court suspended the hearing into corruption references filed against members of the Sharif family without any proceeding as it is awaiting the Islamabad High Court’s decision in connection with a petition filed by ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, which seeks the consolidation of the references.

The high court’s decision is expected to be announced in the afternoon today. The hearing at the accountability court will resume after the decision is announced.

The bureau’s prosecution team and three witnesses also appeared before the court. As the hearing begun, Advocate Khawaja Harris, the counsel representing the Sharifs, requested the court to suspend proceedings till the high court announces its decision.

In turn, the court suspended proceedings till 1: 00pm as the advocate told the bench that the verdict is expected to be announced at that time.
