AC To Resume Proceedings of Avenfield Reference Today

Islamabad (May 02, 2018): The accountability court will resume the proceedings of Avenfield properties reference, filed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against former Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and his family, today.

Judge Muhammad Bashir will resume the hearing of the case. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif along with his daughter Maryam Nawaz and Captain (R) Safdar will appear before the court today.

Earlier on April 30, hearing of Avenfield Property Reference was adjourned till today (May 02). The Accountability Court had refused to make Panama Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report part of case record in Avenfield Reference case.

During the hearing of Avenfield Reference against the Sharif family, Accountability Court ruled that the complete JIt report could not be part of the case record, however investigative officer can make the documents, which were gathered by the JIT, part of court record and even he can also present the other documents included in JIT as well.After hearing arguments from both sides, Judge Bashir allowed NAB to record statements of Imran Dogar for the Avenfield reference.

“The order for the application filed by the defence will be announced later’ the court said.

Earlier, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Captain Retired Safdar had appeared before the court, whereas last witness of the NAB, Imran Dogar had recording his statement.

During last hearing of the case on April 24,  Maryam’s counsel Amjad Pervez conducted cross-examination of prosecution witness Zahir Shah.

DG NAB operations Zahir Shah recorded his statement before the court on April 23,. The NAB was granted permission from the accountability court to produce a new witness, DG NAB operations Zahir Shah, into the case in order to produce new evidences.

Background of The Cases:

The trial against the Sharif family had commenced on September 14, 2017.

NAB to file three supplementary references against Nawaz

The corruption references, filed against the Sharifs, pertain to the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment, offshore companies including Flagship Investment Ltd, and Avenfield properties of London.Nawaz and sons Hussain and Hasan are accused in all three references whereas his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Safdar are accused in the Avenfield reference only.

The two brothers, based abroad, have been absconding since the proceedings began last year and were declared proclaimed offenders by the court.
