Accountability Court adjourns hearing of corruption case against Sharjeel

Karachi (May 6, 2017): An Accountability Court on Saturday adjourned hearing of Rs5 billion corruption reference against former Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon and others by May 13, 2017.

The court heard NAB reference filed against the former minister and others for misuse of power and authority and embezzlement in distribution of government advertisements.

During the course of haring, Memon’s counsel told the court that documents filled in sacks were presented in the court, but these documents lacked index. He apprehended that NAB might brought in news documents in later stage.

The counsel submitted that Article 10-A of the constitution guaranteed the right to fair trial. He pleaded the court to direct NAB to provide them index of the documents presented by the anti-corruption watchdog.

During Saturday’s hearing, Investigation Officer presented a report regarding the properties owned by absconding accused in the case, Anita Baloch.

Later the court adjourned further hearing of the case till May 13, 2017.

Sharjeel Memon and others accused have been charged in the NAB reference of misusing power and authority and embezzlement in distribution of government advertisements amounting to Rs 5billion.

Information Department officials including Zulfiqar Ali Shalwani, Mansoor Ahmed and others are co-accused in the Rs5 billion corruption case.

Memon has recently returned to Pakistan and joined the trial as he was in self-exile in London for over a year after law-enforcement agencies launched a crackdown against politicians and bureaucrats on various corruption cases.

Memon is currently on pre-arrest bail granted by Sindh High Court.

A division bench of the court also heard the plea of the former Sindh minister against inclusion of his name in Exit Control List (ECL) by Interior Ministry.
