Angry Birds sequel to be released in 2019

Web Desk (May 29, 2017): Columbia Pictures and Rovio Entertainment will launch The Angry Birds Movie 2 on September 20, 2019, a date that will coincide with the 10th anniversary of the original game about birds being flung at egg-stealing pigs.

It’s a significant landmark in mobile gaming, of which Angry Birds was one of the first big successes. The puzzle-like bird-launching game became a phenomenon not longer after its 2009 debut, spawning numerous sequels and spinoffs, merchandise and the first Angry Birds movie, which was in theaters last summer.

The first Angry Birds movie, released last year, earned about $350 million at the box office and gave a boost to Rovio’s game sales, helping the company to swing to an annual profit after years of falling earnings, job cuts and divestments.

This time around, the sequel will be directed by Disney and Sony Pictures Animation vet Thurop Van Orman (The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, Adventure Time) and co-directed by John Rice (Rick and Morty, King of the Hill), who served as lead storyboard artist on the first movie and the Angry Birds Hatchlings shorts. Peter Ackerman who has credits on Ice Age and FX’s The Americans, is writing, with John Cohen producing. Sony Pictures Imageworks will be handling the animation in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation. The first Angry Birds movie was directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly.
