ANP’s Haroon Bilour Among 14 Martyred In Peshawar Blast

Peshawar (July 11, 2018): A senior leader of Awami National Party (ANP) and candidate for PK-78 Haroon Bilour among 14 people were killed and 65 others sustained injuries in an explosion in Peshawar on Tuesday night.

According to police, the explosion occurred during a corner meeting of Awami National Party (ANP) in the Yaka Toot area of Peshawar.

The blast occurred in Yaka Toot area of the provincial capital, as Haroon arrived at the stage to address supporters.

The police did not confirm the nature of the blast, however, a local ANP leader while talking to journalists said that a suicide bomber blew himself when Bilour entered the compound where the meeting was being held.

The blast took place when Haroon Bilour, who was contesting elections from PK-78 constituency, arrived at the site where the ANP workers had gathered for a corner meeting. Bilour suffered serious injuries and was shifted to the hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

CCPO Peshawar Qazi Jameel put the death toll from the blast at 12. He said that nearly 8 kilogram of TNT explosives were used in the blast.

Zulfiqar Ali Babakhel, a spokesman for the Lady Reading Hospital, confirmed the death toll from the blast saying that above 50 wounded persons were brought to the hospital.

The injured were being given medical attention at the hospital, he said. Confirming Haroon Bilour’s martyrdom, the spokesman said that Haroon’s son, Danial Bilour, was safe.

The rescue teams and law enforcement agencies reached the site of the blast. Police and bomb disposal officials collected evidence from the site of the blast and initiated an investigation into the incident.

Haroon was the son of Bashir Ahmed Bilour, a senior ANP figure who was himself martyred in a suicide blast in Peshawar in 2012.

At least five wounded persons are said to be in critical condition at Peshawar’s Lady Reading Hospital.
