Asia Bibi Released From Multan Jail: Sources

Multan (November 08, 2018): Asia Bibi, a Christian woman recently acquitted by the Supreme Court in a blasphemy case against her, has been Released from a women’s prison in Multan on Wednesday night, sources.

According to sources, jail authorities had received documents pertaining to her release earlier in the day after which she was freed.

The allegations against Bibi dated back to June 2009, when she was labouring in a field and a row broke out with some Muslim women who alleged that she committed blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

Bibi was convicted of blasphemy and sentenced to death in 2010, despite her advocates maintaining her innocence and insisting the accusers held grudges against her.The Supreme Court had acquitted Bibi on October 31. The acquittal had led to protests in several cities across the country.

Enraged masses had blocked several routes across the country for two days, while at some places they had also set fire to vehicles. The demonstrations saw closure of schools, colleges and universities, as well as cancellation of examinations.

However, the government and the protesters from different religious groups, led by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), had reached an agreement two days later on Friday, November 2.As per the agreement, the government will raise no objections over the review petition over Bibi’s acquittal.

The agreement further stated that due process will be followed immediately to include the name of Asia Bibi in ECL.

The protests were called off following the agreement.
