MOGADISHU: At least 9 people have died in a car bomb explosion in the capital of Somalia, health officials have said.
The blast at a security checkpoint leftover 90 civilians injured and killed mostly students returning to class, according to Mogadishu Mayor Omar Muhamoud.
Dr Mohamed Yusuf, a Mogadishu hospital director, said they had received 73 bodies so far.
Abdirizak Mohamed, a Somalian MP, reported the toll could be as high as 90 people, with most being civilian casualties.
The bomb exploded during morning rush hour in Mogadishu and targeted a tax collection centre, according to police.
