Atal Bihari Vajpayee Passes Away At 93

New Delhi(August 16, 2018): The former Indian Prime Minister passed away on Thursday at the age of 93. Vajpayee breathed his last at the AIIMS where he was admitted on June 11 with multiple health issues.

The AIIMS had in a statement on Wednesday night described the former Indian PM’s condition as critical. “Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been admitted for the last 9 weeks at AIIMS.

Unfortunately, his condition has worsened over the last 24 hours. His condition is critical and he is on a life support system,” the hospital had said. On Thursday, the hospital said the former PM’s condition was same and that he continues to be on life support system. Vajpayee was a diabetic and had only one functional kidney. His cognitive abilities had significantly weakened after he suffered a stroke in 2009. Later, he also developed dementia. Earlier in June, the BJP had described Vajpayee’s hospitalization as a “routine check-up”. Vajpayee was treated under the supervision of renowned pulmonologist Randeep Guleria (Director, AIIMS), who had been the BJP leader’s personal physician for several years. Vajpayee was prime minister of India for a brief period in 1996. He again became the PM for two consecutive stints from 1998 to 2004. However, due to his deteriorating health condition in the last 10 years, he had retired from active politics.
