Belth Wrestling Squad Returns Home after Winning 11 Medals

Lahore (September 26, 2017): The 29-member national Belth Wrestling squad was accorded a warm welcome on its return to the country after winning 11 medals at the fifth Asian Games held in capital of Turkmenistan Ashgabat.

The national squad had participated in indoor games and martial arts events and bagged one silver and ten bronze medals. The members of national squad participated in various events including athletics, swimming, and wrestling.

The 29-member squad comprising four women was accorded a warm welcome by Punjab Sports Board on its arrival at Allama Iqbal International Airport here.

Talking to media at the airport the coach of the squad the coach of the 29-member squad Ameer Mukhtar lauded the performance of his players at the fifth Asian Games.

It may be mentioned here that Ambareen Massih won three bronze medals for Pakistan. She completed  the hat trick for Pakistan on September 23 which was on the seventh day of the o5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games which were held at various venues in the City Olympic Complex.

Ambareen was the first female Pakistani female to win three medals – one each in the Traditional Wrestling, Classic Free Style Wrestling and Alysh Free.

It may be mentioned here that Pakistan won six medals- a gold, a silver, and four bronze- on the opening day of 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games on September 16.

Pakistan’s Shahzeb Nawaz and Muhammad Rafique in men had upset Thailand on points. The duo had earlier upset Turkmenistan’s twin brothers Ahmad Tanriberdiyew and Yousaf Tanriberdyew, after taking a bye in the opening round. The duo secured 45 points against 44.5 of strong Thailand pair, leaving a difference of 0.5. It was a close fight. Both the players thanked the Almighty by kissing the floor on winning the first gold medal of the games for Pakistan.

Pakistan had also grabbed two silver and three bronze medals in jujitsu and one bronze medal in traditional wrestling on the opening day. The Abu Hurrara and Ammar duo grabbed silver medals by defeating Tajikistan and then claiming the golden point when their fight with Thailand tied on 80 points each. They later lost the gold medal fight to host Turkmenistan.

Similarly, in women duo show classic event, Sonia Manzoor and Komal Emmanul had grabbed bronze medals with Thailand won the gold medal and Turkmenistan took silver medal respectively. Pakistan lost to Turkmenistan and Vietnam, and defeated arch-rival India.

In the traditional wrestling Ambareen Massih had won bronze medal in 58kg weight while her sister Humaira lost. Earlier, 135-member contingent of Pakistan led by Chef de Mission Amjad Ali Khan was warmly received by Turkmenistan Olympic officials.

In all more than 6,000 athletes from 65 Asian countries participated in 21 different categories in the Asian Indoor Games.
