Yesterday, India’s Supreme Court legalised consensual sexual relations between adults of the same gender as it partially struck down a British-era law that criminalised homosexuality.
A five-judge Constitution bench of the Indian Supreme Court delivered its unanimous verdict in four separate opinions.
Chief justice Dipak Misra said that as he quashed the cornerstone of Section 377, the law had become a weapon for harassment for the LGBT community. Any discrimination on the basis of sexuality amounts to a violation of fundamental rights.
