China Defends Pakistan After Trump Tweet

Beijing (January 02, 2018): China defended Pakistan after US President Donald Trump threatened to cut aid to Pakistan after accusing the country of giving nothing in return except for “lies and deceit”.

China, on the other hand, praised the efforts made by Pakistan to counter terrorism.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang remarked that Pakistan has made enormous efforts and sacrifices for the fight against terrorism and has made an outstanding contribution to the global cause of counter-terrorism, according to PTI.

China is glad to see Pakistan engaging in international cooperation, including counter-terrorism, on the basis of mutual respect so as to contribute to regional peace and stability, he said.

“China and Pakistan are all-weather partners. We stand ready to promote and deepen our all-around cooperation so as to bring benefits to the two sides.”When question how Trump’s outburst would affect China’s efforts to bring peace to Pakistan, Geng remarked, “We believe as neighbours China, Pakistan and Afghanistan are closely linked not only geographically but also in terms of common interests. It is natural for us to enhance communication and exchanges.”

Earlier, United States (US) President Donald Trump on Monday began his new year by accusing Pakistan of giving Washington “nothing but lies and deceit”.

The US president tweeted that Islamabad thinks of US leaders “As Fools”.

He said Washington had “foolishly given Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years.”

The US president’s latest tweet follows in the aftermath of an increasingly tense back-and-forth between Washington and Islamabad after Trump announced the administration’s latest national security strategy.

During the announcement, the US president was quick to remind Pakistan of its obligation towards helping America because it receives “massive payments” from Washington every year.

“We have made clear to Pakistan that while we desire continued partnership, we must see decisive action against terrorist groups operating on their territory. And we make massive payments every year to Pakistan. They have to help,” the US president said.In December 2017, the Pentagon also informed the US Congress that it would take ‘unilateral steps’ in areas of divergence with Pakistan while expanding cooperation between the two countries where their interests converge.

Yesterday, Pakistan also summoned US Ambassador David Hale to its Foreign Office and recorded protest over Trump statement.
