China Rejects Katy Perry’s Visa for Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

Web Desk (November 17, 2017): Katy Perry and Gigi Hadid will unfortunately not be a part of Victoria’s Secret fashion show being held in Shanghai, China this month.

According to Page Six, the singer and the model have “now been banned from China indefinitely.”

Katy, who was set to perform at the VS show, had applied for a Chinese visa but it was denied by Chinese officials.

The Firework singer had been initially assured that she’d gain access to the show. However, after the Chinese government officials came across the 2015 concert in Taiwan where the singer wore a dress with sunflowers ─ a symbol adopted by anti-China protesters ─ they reversed their decision.

Making her case weak, Katy was seen waving a Taiwanese flag during the concert in show of support for the country, which has been pushing for independence with China for years now.

Gigi ─ on the other hand ─ has been banned over an Instagram video — in which she holds up a biscuit shaped like a Buddha statue and closes her eyes as if she were mimicking the religious figure.

But Katy and Gigi aren’t the first celebs who’ve banned from China, Page Six reports.

“For every artist who wants to perform in China, officials comb through their social-media and press reports to see if they have done anything deemed to be offensive to the country,” a source told the publication.

“Maroon 5 was banned a few years ago because one band member wished the Dalai Lama happy birthday on Twitter.”

VS Supermodel Adriana Lima’s also has her visa held up due to an ongoing “diplomatic problem.”

There hasn’t been a comment from Katy’s rep but she is being replaced in the show by Harry Styles.
