Chris Gayle Picked for ODI Series Against India

WEB DESK: West Indies have named star batsman Chris Gayle in their 14-member squad for the ODI series against India beginning 8 August in Guyana.

Chris Gayle, who had announced that he would retire after the ICC Men’s World Cup 2019 in February, later changed his decision during the marquee event, saying that he would definitely play in the ODI series against India. The Jamaica-born cricketer is two short of 300 ODI appearances and on the verge of becoming West Indies’ leading ODI runscorer.

Gayle had staged a strong comeback in limited-overs cricket with 434 runs from four innings in the home series against England earlier this year, but could not carry the same form in the World Cup where he managed just two half-centuries in eight innings.

All-rounder Andre Russell, who had been sidelined during the World Cup due to a knee injury, misses out from the ODI squad, despite being named for the three-match T20I series beginning 3 August in Florida. Darren Bravo, the left-handed batsman who has managed only 55 runs in his last seven ODI innings is the other notable absentee. Batsman Sunil Ambris, off-spinner Ashley Nurse and fast bowler Shannon Gabriel to miss out from the 14-member squad.

West Indies ODI squad: Jason Holder (capt), Chris Gayle, John Campbell, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran, Roston Chase, Fabian Allen, Carlos Brathwaite, Keemo Paul, Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas, Kemar Roach
